Dreamy Pop Band on Taylor Swift’s Radar
Dreamy Pop Band on Taylor Swift’s Radar
Billionaire Taylor Swift has been dominating the music industry in the pop world. Her hit songs climbing up the charts, selling out global shows, and creating her own empire. Not to mention, she’s helped kick off other rising artists careers like Benson Boone, Gracie Abrams, Haim, Shawn Mendes, Sabrina Carpentar, etc. It won’t come as a surprise if Taylor Swift invites this Texas shoegaze dream pop band called Cigarettes After Sex to open for her future tours. Cigarettes After Sex have been on Taylor’s radar since 2017 when they released their self-titled debut album. Their song “Nothing’s Gonna Hurt You Baby” was featured on Taylor’s personal Spotify playlist. You may have heard a cover of that song by Donna Missal on the film Promising Young Woman. On top of that, Taylor’s ex-boyfriend Matty Healy of the Britpop group The 1975 had them as openers in England last year.
I came to discover Cigarettes After Sex back in 2016 when they supported 90s grunge band Garbage at the Masonic in San Francisco. Rapidly, they gained a following which has allowed them to appear on Jimmy Kimmel Live plus headline at iconic Bay Area venues like The Fillmore, Fox Theater, and recently Oakland Arena. Just like Taylor herself, Cigarettes After Sex are going to travel across seas to sold out shows.
It makes sense why Taylor would even listen to this indie band because their music is raw hazy noir romance that’s up her alley. Frontman Greg Gonzalez sings with pure intimacy and melancholy. The songwriting for Taylor and Cigarettes After Sex are very similar because they share stories of lust, flawed love, friends to lovers, heartbreak, and breakups. It’s hard not to feel any emotion while listening to Cigarettes After Sex because this band consumes your heart. Swifties get ready to cry and be obsessed for your next favorite musical act.
