Dear Evan Hansen In San Francisco

You would think that a musical that centers around a teen suicide would be very depressing. and while very heavy, “Dear Evan Hansen” is an eye-opening look about how mental illness affects those left behind without getting too dark.

Thanks to Broadway SF for the invite to the show. The show opened on Broadway in 2016 and won 6 tony awards. The show revolves around an anxiety-ridden teen, Evan Hansen, who, through a series of unfortunate events, starts a series  of lies that, at first brings comfort to the family of a teen who committed suicide.

This show, as expected, requires the cast to deliver various emotions and they do an outstanding, believable performance. Many musicals have an unbelievable, “Cinderella” ending. not “Dear Evan Hansen” – the finale is totally realistic. “Dear Evan Hansen” is a really good look at a contemporary big issue. Don’t miss it – it’s at the Orpheum theater in San Francisco through February 19. Get ticket information at kkiq-dot-com.
